Chapter 1



“Hey wait for me”

“Hurry up slowpoke!”

Those were the words I spoke to her. She was on the other side of the street and appeared to have dozed off into another one of her fantasies. She set one foot on the black pavement, the light turned red, the stop hand stopped flickering and I knew. If only I could have done something rather than telling her to hurry up. We all make mistakes and learn from them, I never thought that this mistake would end up being a lesson of life. In that instant, I had lost my friend.

It was the beginning of college life and well we went our separate ways. However, it seemed that we weren’t that much apart. Every weekend she would travel through train from college to home where we would spend our time out having as much fun as we could. That fall I finally got a boyfriend and well it was odd to go out with my boyfriend and my BFF at the same time but it seemed that they were getting along fine. I was the luckiest girl in the world, a friend since childhood and a boyfriend who I adore. What more can I ask for? But life likes to play around with perfection that I never knew that destiny would bring us sorrow to our little paradise. It was November, the beginning of a new month and we were all planning to celebrate together with our family and go somewhere fun. November 20, six days before thanksgiving and she was give a whole week off of classes. She came home early for the holiday and we decided to go out to the mall. So we went and hang out together, this time my boyfriend had to go visit his grandparent in LA. We spent some money and it was getting dark so we decided to take a taxi.

“Oh fudge I spent all my money on stuff, what about you?”
“Oh well, I spent it all on the food so I guess we will need to walk home”

“HUH walk home, you know I don’t do walk”
“Oh well sorry but looks like we don’t have enough for a taxi stupid”

“Hey don’t call me stupid!”

“Oh my bad RETARD” I mocked

“Well at least its sincere”

“How many time do I have to say it your not a retard, your just mentally challenged”

“Oh and that should make me feel better”

“Hey you’re the one who said that you’re a retard”

:”True so how far is it the walk”

“Well about six miles”

“Wow I ain’t walking no six miles, lets just call a cab and ill have my parents pay the guy. OH oh”

“What do you mean oh oh?”

“I think I lost my cellphone!”

Eventually, I ended up calling a cab. Just then it started to rain to I told the cab we would meet him at the nearby gestation which was on the other side. I pushed the button for the walk sign, it changed and so I crossed. It was raining and a mist of fog began to show. I turn to see her still on the other side. She appeared to be daydreaming but this was no time to daydream. I saw the cab waiting of us  on the gestation.
“Hey stupid hurry up”

It all happened very fast yet in slow motion. I screamed out her name as I ran towards her motionless body. The cab and truck guys both got out of their cars and headed towards us. The cab guy called an ambulance as a police called both of our parents. I rode in the police car which I requested to be taken to the hospital. There she was taken to emergency. I waited in the waiting room as both families arrived. I ran towards my mom grabbing hold of her jacket as I cried. Hours later the doctor called us out.

“Are you the girl’s parents” her parent’s nod, “Well she appears to have damaged part of her brain, unfortunately she is alive but, I’m afraid that she has lost her memories, It’s so bad that she doesn’t even know her own name. She woke up for just a while and then became unconscious. I appear she woke up as a sign that she’s alive but the damage is permanent”

“I want to see her”

“And you may be?”

“I’m her best friend since first grade, I bet if she sees me she’ll remember”

“It’s a try alright follow me, you can all come” we entered the room quietly, she was asleep. I lean forward and whispered in her ear, “Hey retard, I see your still alive. Good cuz you know I would have gotten pissed if you did. I know you know me, c’mon open your eyes”

Slowly she began to wake up, he eyes were the same, a nice dark brown but they were different. They seemed empty and lonely. Her expression was vivid and unreadable. Her mouth opened and out came the most hurtful words.

“Who are you?”
